On this week’s show we are going to see the softer side of our notoriously toughtest cast member, as well as welcome back one of our most badass musical guests of all time.
Last week proved that The Blindfold Episode should be an annual fiasco on TCGS. Nothing is more terrifying than thinking the whole audience left or being hit by a rake and reaching out to realize whoever is hitting you with it is covered in fur. Plus we discovered our newest Random in the most sudden and unexpected way it’s gone down since Jean. She LITERALLY fell into my arms. I can’t wait to see how this turns out.
During last week’s episode, Shannon O’Neill made it clear that she has no interest in providing fans of TCGS with access to her life, as opposed to me, who has somehow made something resembling a career out of providing TMI 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Well, that got the writing staff thinking – Shannon is the BEST. She’s one of my all time best friends, someone I’ve shared the stage with thousands of times, and someone I view not just a s a collaborator but a genuine muse. I don’t think there are any fans of the show that don’t view her as a true badass, a comedic powerhouse, an inspiring shit kicker of a human being.
That being sad, Shannon is also the definition of TOUGH. She doesn’t indulge in all the emo weepy crap I do and has no interest in making her life fair game for comedy. I think maybe some of our viewers, even some of our cast and crew members, wind up intimidated by Shannon. It’s a sometimes frustrating by-product of her being the baddest bad ass I know.
But I can say personally – Shannon has the sweetest side of any of my friends when you get under that surface. Shannon has given me the best advice, has let me lean on her during what are legitimately some of my life’s loneliest moments, and always does it in a way that reminds you that real life is real life and doesn’t have to be a big melodramatic thing.
This week’s show will be built to try to bring that side of Shannon to the surface. This week’s episode will focus on highlighting The Softer Side of Shannon O’Neill.
Callers – I want you to call up this week for life advice questions for Shannon! I get a lot of that stuff personally – this week is not about me! This week is about you guys asking Shannon for legit advice from Shannon, and we’ll see if we can’t find a few occasions where we manage to break her a bit and see if we can get beyond her razor sharp wit and ability to cut through to callers with stunning ease and get to the more thoughtful, warm, gentle Shannon I’ve had the pleasure of knowing many times over the years. My guess is that she WILL RESIST THIS. Be genuine, callers – flimsy, forced, faking it attempts at asking for this advice will be eviscerated, I’m sure – Shannon has a bullshit detector like no other.
Obviously, compliments for Shannon as a performer and human being are more than welcome as well, but let’s remember that one of the cardinal rules of TCGS is that when it becomes nothing but a love fest it gets really uncomfortable and boring.
Call us at 212-757-1393 to participate in this tug of war with one of the best in the game.
ON TOP OF THAT – we welcome back our old friends the STUMBLEBUM BRASS BAND to the show. These guys are one of the musical acts I always point to as kindred spirits of the show and as people who I couldn’t respect more. Their punk stylings played out on brass instruments blew us away the first time they joined us, and I could not be one bit happier to welcome them back to the show. Last time they played the intro to their song and I could feel our entire audience going “This tuba and trumpet stuff is really cool…” then the first line of their song was “I’M GONNA FUCK YOU IN THE ASS” and it felt like a bomb exploded in MNN studios. There are few better in the game. The Stumblebums are playing our TCGS sponsored concert at Littlefield on November 1st as well, so enjoy them on the show this week and come out for a full length, badass set from them in a few weeks!
For tickets to this show, email email hidden; JavaScript is required – this is gonna be a barn burner, a slobberknocker, a down home country riot. I get to celebrate one of my best friends and welcome back one of my favorite bands – it’s weeks like this that make me remember all the good things about why this show exists.
