ok i'm enjoying this thread immensely, thanks for all the lists!
Here's my recommendation(I'm just copy pasting the description: i might get too excited):

Dark Side of the Moon is a French documentary by director William Karel which originally aired on Arte in 2002 with the title Opération Lune. The basic premise for the film is the theory that the television footage from the Apollo 11 Moon landing was faked and actually recorded in a studio by the CIA with help from director Stanley Kubrick

And here it goes: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=2304895215368202642
I would advise not to google it before watching because you get spoiled right away...

Two of my favorite all time movies are Grey Gardens and Gates of Heaven. If you haven't seen them, definitely check them out!

And after all the talk about Another State of Mind, I'm going to counter with Decline of Western Civilization. Weirdly enough, my Catholic school religion teacher, a former punk, was the first person to lend me this movie, along with Lech Kowalski's D.O.A.

Also, someone mentioned the Bob Mould book...not sure if I'm alone on this but I kind of hated it and felt like Bob came off as really unlikeable (also way too much coverage of his real estate transactions over the years). So I would steer people away from reading that if you love Husker Du.

Just saw Searching for Sugar Man - cannot recommend it enough, such a beautiful story!

Also love The Devil and Daniel Johnston - super interesting.

My last roommate was super into documentaries and made me watch them with him all the time. One of my favorites was Miss Representation.

Two that I watched recently that tie into this spooky time of the year:

Of Dolls and Murder - About a woman who created incredibly detailed miniature murder scenes based on real crimes to teach forensic scientists and detectives to look at the medical facts at a scene to determine time and circumstances. It's narrated by John Waters (!) and it's worth it just to see the miniatures.

Hell House - 'Haunted' house put on by a evangelical church in Texas to try to 'save' the people in their community. One of many scary evangelical docs out there and one I love watching and re-watching. A lot of the people in the doc are pretty sympathetic but the haunted house is just so horrible.

Both are on Netflix Instant!

Happy October!

Well i thought it was fucking depressing. But thanks for sharing! I did lol at 3 moments: when they draw a star of david in the satanist scene and call it a pentagram (Maybe they could teach christian ancient greek at their school!).

When the pastor talks about how the church was created when they split from another one in 1940, because "some of them had a difficult time being under a black bishop". Priceless. That's the kind of church you want to be part of, right? RIGHT?

And the third was when the pastor tells everyone how they are all winners - and spells out an opposite-TCGS speach. I've JUST watched the "Loser is the new nerd" episode before i watch this part of the doc. Is this a sign from GOD Chris Gethard? And what does it mean (I assume it means i'm a loser).

PS:that's the part i'm talking about: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BbhQsRJ6ARw#t=52m48s

Peace, losers!

Dear Zachary - Really sad, but really good. everyone needs to see it!

Darkon - I can't believe no one's mentioned this one yet. It's all about a live action roleplaying group & it examines their roleplaying & their personal lives. Very interesting.

Confessions of a Superhero - All about the people that dress as Superheroes on the Hollywood walk of fame.

Two of those are on Netflix. You should really look up Darkon though because it's great

I had to show Darkon when it premiered at Cinema Village. The Darkon LARPers spent a whole weekend promoting the film by battling around Union Square.
